Asian Productivity Organization (APO)

The Asian Productivity Organization established on 11th May 1961 as a regional intergovernmental organization. It is a nonpolitical, nonprofit and nondiscriminatory organization which contributes to the sustainable socioeconomic development of Asia and the Pacific through enhancing productivity. APO is acting as a think tank, and undertaking smart initiatives in the industry, agriculture, Service and Public sectors. They provide practical training through a combination of lecturers by experts, field visits for observation of actual applications, and country reports by participants for the sharing of experiences.

Member Countries

APO membership is open to countries in Asia and the Pacific which are members of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP). The current membership is 20 economies, comprising Bangladesh, Cambodia, Republic of China, Fiji, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Islamic Republic of Iran, Japan, Republic of Korea, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. These countries/economies pledge to assist each other in their productivity drives in a spirit of mutual cooperation by sharing knowledge, information, and experience.

National Productivity Secretariat (NPS)

NPO Established (1966)

Sri Lanka joined the APO in 1966, and the Management Development and Productivity Center under the Ministry of Industries was established in 1968. It later became the National Institute of Management, and then the National Institute of Business Management.

In 1994, the Ministry of Industries wanted to strengthen the NPO and speed up the dissemination of productivity promotion techniques throughout the Island. Hence, National Productivity Secretariat was set up as a separate unit. In 2001, the functions of the National Productivity Secretariat were transferred to the Ministry of Employment and Labor. After that, it has been transferred to the Ministry of Productivity Promotion. Currently, NPS is under the purview the Ministry of Public Administration, Disaster Management and Livestock Development.
